Fertility

Eight out of ten couples trying to conceive will do so within the first year as long as they are not using contraception and they are having sex every two to three days. Of those couples who are not pregnant at the end of that year, half will conceive within the next year. In other words, 90 per cent of couples should conceive within two years of trying.

The 10 per cent of couples that have not fallen pregnant may require investigation. In about a quarter of these cases we don’t find a specific cause but when we do, the main causes are:

•male problems, such as low sperm count (25 per cent);

•ovulation problems (25 per cent);

•tubal problems, such as blocked fallopian tubes (20 per cent);

•uterine problems (10 per cent).

In around 40 per cent of cases there is a mixture of male and female problems.
